How-To-Create-A-Cozy-Room-2You can picture a stark white room, one window with a mini blind and thinking what can I do to make this feel like a cozy space? Consider these ideas when trying to create a more intimate and comfortable room. These 4 tricks could be used in a room in your home, an apartment or even a dorm room.

1.    Adding throw blankets, plush pillows and soft textures will add immediate coziness to your space. Books in bookcases add texture, as do baskets. Your furniture finishes should be textured instead of sleek- so no chrome and mirrors. Most styles of furniture can meet these criteria but texture must be added.How-To-Create-A-Cozy-Room-1

2.    Patterns in a room are important. Choose those that fit your style; also keep in mind that the more patterns you use, the smaller the room will appear which helps to create the "cozy" feeling. Throw rugs are a great way to add dimension to a room (and is also renter and dorm friendly).

3.    Lighting will add shadows – this is good! Shadows block out areas and draw you more visually into the room. Directed lighting is exactly what you need- light that you can direct where it lands. Examples are table lamps, and standing lamps with down cast shades which create the shadows. Be sure to use warm varieties of incandescent lighting instead of florescent or halogen.

4.    Color is another main ingredient and the darker the color, the more it draws you into a space. Whether it’s wood furniture, pillow shams or on your walls. If you can not paint walls think about adding a large canvas to the wall.

Cozy rooms are a great place to end a day. Just remember the larger the room the more it can handle and smaller the room use elements in moderation to avoid making the cozy space a cramped space.
