Juan was driving down a country lane in his pickup when suddenly a chicken darted into the road in front of him. He slammed on his brakes, but realized that the chicken was speeding off down the road at about 30 miles an hour.

Intrigued, he tried to follow the bird with his truck, but he couldn't catch up to the accelerating chicken. Seeing it turn into a small farm, Juan followed it. To his astonishment, he realized that the chicken had three legs. Looking around the small farm, he noticed that ALL of the
chickens had three legs.

The farmer came out of his house, and Juan said, "Three-legged chickens? That's astonishing!"

The farmer replied, "Yep. I bred 'em that way because I love drumsticks."

Juan was curious. "How does a three-legged chicken taste?"

The farmer smiled. "Dunno. Haven't been able to catch one yet."

LEESBURG — The Lake County Parks & Trails Division is seeking a few bird-watching and butterfly-watching volunteers to help conduct a bird & butterfly survey at PEAR Park, located at 5336 University Ave., Leesburg, on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 7 to 10 a.m.

“Experience is a plus but none is needed, just a desire to help,” said Lake County Park Ranger Gallus Quigley. “Migration will be just getting underway so it’s a great time to put behind the summer doldrums and see some cool birds and butterflies.”

Participants are expected to hike about 2 to 3 miles over sometimes uneven terrain. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, field guides, water, snacks, insect repellent, a hat and hiking shoes.

Reservations are required. Experienced bird watchers who wish to volunteer for this activity are encouraged to call the Lake County Parks & Trails Division at (352) 253-4950 or e-mail parksandtrails@lakecountyfl.gov.

LEESBURG, FL – The Boys & Girls Clubs of Lake and Sumter Counties, in conjunction with Lake-Sumter Community College Athletics and Student Life, will be holding A Day for Kids on October 2nd.  Day for Kids is a national initiative to promote the importance of spending meaningful time with young people, and seeks to reinforce the importance of families and remind youth just how important they are. 

The event will be held at the Lake-Sumter Community College gym and outside area from 10 am to 1 pm.  Attendees will be able to participate in games and competitions run by L-SCC Athletics volunteers. The event will also include information tables hosted by local child service groups promoting educational and health-related programs allowing kids and their parents to connect with organizations that can support and help them as they spend time together. The event is free and open to the public.

“I am excited about this event – the Club is always looking for ways to help kids spent quality time with their families,” said Robb Elmatti, NE Lake Unit Director.  “We are also celebrating a successful partnership with the College, which is allowing us to provide a central location for this fun day and make it a bigger and better event than we’ve held in the past.”

If your vision loss is making it difficult for you to do daily tasks such as pour a cup of hot coffee, dial the telephone, cook, identify money or medication, or see steps and curbs, New Vision’s Independent Living Skills classes can teach you to successfully complete these tasks and enable you to return to a life of independence and confidence.

The classes also include group discussion and presentations to help with adjusting to vision loss.  Topics include anatomy of the eye, common eye conditions, and self-advocacy.  Students are assisted in obtaining numerous community resources including free telephone directory assistance, handicapped parking permits, property and income tax exemptions, Talking Books, and ID cards, as needed.

The FDA has received several reports of health injuries from consumers using this product, including severe nausea, vomiting, and life-threatening low blood pressure from dehydration.

Consumers who have MMS should stop using it immediately and throw it away.

MMS is distributed on Internet sites and online auctions by multiple independent distributors. Although the products share the MMS name, the look of the labeling may vary.

The product instructs consumers to mix the 28 percent sodium chlorite solution with an acid such as citrus juice. This mixture produces chlorine dioxide, a potent bleach used for stripping textiles and industrial water treatment. High oral doses of this bleach, such as those recommended in the labeling, can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and symptoms of severe dehydration.

MMS claims to treat multiple unrelated diseases, including HIV, hepatitis, the H1N1 flu virus, common colds, acne, cancer, and other conditions. The FDA is not aware of any research that MMS is effective in treating any of these conditions. MMS also poses a significant health risk to consumers who may choose to use this product for self-treatment instead of seeking FDA-approved treatments for these conditions.

The FDA continues to investigate and may pursue civil or criminal enforcement actions as appropriate to protect the public from this potentially dangerous product.

The FDA advises consumers who have experienced any negative side effects from MMS to consult a health care professional as soon as possible and to discard the product. Consumers and health care professionals should report adverse events to the FDA’s MedWatch program at 800-FDA-1088 or online at www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm.

*4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves (about 1 pound total)
*1/3 cup all-purpose flour
*1/4 teaspoon pepper
*2 tablespoons butter
*1 cup chicken broth
*1/4 cup lemon juice
*1 tablespoon cornstarch
*1/4 cup green onions

Directions:

1. Rinse chicken; pat dry. In a shallow dish stir together flour and pepper. Lightly coat each piece of chicken with flour mixture.
2. In a large skillet cook chicken in hot butter over medium heat for 6 to 8 minutes or until chicken is tender and no longer pink, turning once. Remove chicken from skillet and keep warm.
3. For sauce, in small bowl stir together chicken broth, lemon juice and cornstarch. Add to skillet. Cook and stir over medium heat until thickened and bubbly. Cook and stir for two more minutes. Stir in green onions. Serve chicken with sauce.

These courageous men and women all fought and won their own unique cancer battles and will be telling their stories around the county to help raise awareness about the Cattle Baron’s Ball, and the importance of raising funds to assist those in Lake & Sumter Counties who are fighting their own cancer battles right now.

Their message is simple: monies raised here help fund services provided by the American Cancer Society to local families,  including: transportation, resources, guidance, R.O.C.K. (Reaching Out to Cancer Kids) programs, family weekends and college scholarships. In addition, they are focusing their efforts on raising awareness about the role that American Cancer Society plays in conducting critical research in an effort to find cures for cancer.

“The American Cancer Society in Lake and Sumter counties provides a wonderful, supportive and nurturing community for those diagnosed with this disease,” said Pat Fisher,  one of this year’s Survivor Ambassadors.
