2011 Leesburg Art Festival Winners Announced

Best of Show Winner LEESBURG, FLORIDA - Judges Peter Schreyer from Crealde School of Art and Jack King from the University of Tampa chose fourteen winners out of the 62 artists competing for nearly $6000 in prizes at the 34th Annual Leesburg Art Festival in historic downtown Leesburg.
 
The $1500 Best of Show award went to "A Combined Show" by John "Jack" Thursby.  This is the second year that Jack has won the coveted Best in Show award.  First Place and $750 was awarded to Jeweler Marilyn Vaillancourt for "Fairy."  The 3D Judges Choice Award and $500 was given to St. Petersburg artist Diane Canton for "Horse Hair Pot" and the 2D Judges Choice Award and $500 was given to Watercolor artist Lynn Ferris for "Joe."  
 

There were also 10 Special Awards for $250 each which included:

•    "Water Villages" by Vern Yan
•    "Juniper Springs" by Robert Clibbon
•     "Copper Steel" by Lois Horn
•    "Ceremonial Jar" by Richard Kausalik
•    "Apatized" by Deborah Barnes

•    "Blue Moon" by Donna Batson

Lake County Extension to offer Limited Pesticide License Certification Training and Exam

altTAVARES —Lake County Extension is offering a Limited Pesticide License Certification training course and exams on Wednesday, March 23rd from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lake County Agricultural Center, located at 1951 Woodlea Road in Tavares.

The training will review the Florida Department of Agricultural and Consumer Services (FDACS)  publications entitled Applying Pesticides Correctly (SM001) and Ornamental and Turf Pest Control (SM007), available at http://ifasbooks.ifas.ufl.edu/.

Following the training, exams for licenses in Commercial Landscape Maintenance and Lawn and Ornamental will be given. Exams are administered only with a completed application, photo ID and license fee. If you choose to expedite the process, you can apply in advance and bring in an approval letter from the Bureau of Entomology & Pest Control. Applications are available at the following websites:

•    Limited Certification for Governmental & Private Applicators - Lawn & Ornamental

A license is necessary for each government employee, business owner or their employees who apply pesticides outdoors of government or business owned buildings.

A license is necessary for each commercial landscape maintenance person who applies pesticides to ornamental plant beds.

The practice of commercial pest control in Florida is strictly regulated under the provisions of the Structural Pest Control Act, Chapter 482, Florida Statutes (F.S.), and is administered and enforced by the FDACS.

There is a $20 non-refundable registration fee for the class, which covers training materials. The deadline for registration is March 22nd.

The Young Families Health Initiative Committee of Lake County Asking for Sponsors, Exhibitors & Volunteers for Annual Baby Fairs

Lake County – The 22nd Annual Baby Fair: “An Event for First Time Parents” is scheduled at the following locations:

The Young Families Health Initiative Committee of Lake County is coordinating the events which include representation from the following community partners:  Central Healthy Start Coalition, Lake County Health Department, Lake County Cooperative Extension Office, Lake and Sumter EMS and Kiwanis Clubs of Lake and Sumter County.   The mission of the Young Families Health Initiative Committee is to have a positive effect on the lives of Lake County families through pre-natal and post-natal education. 

The Young Families Health Initiatives Committee is asking organizations to please help celebrate these events through a gift or monetary sponsorship. Donated baby items are greatly needed, for example diapers, wipes, etc. and are provided to local Lake County families in need.  In addition, volunteers are needed to help coordinate the event

These events are open to women who are currently pregnant and new first time parents, including Dad, and will include information, education and presentations on healthy lifestyles, child safety, early learning, and positive parenting. Sponsors include Florida Hospital Waterman, Central Florida Health Alliance/Leesburg Regional Medical Center and South Lake Hospital.  Nonprofit community partners including Lake County Health Department’s Healthy Start, Lake and Sumter EMS, Healthy Families, several Lake County Kiwanis clubs, UF Extension Office, and Early Learning partners will also participate in an effort to educate families on available community resources.  Pre-registration is not required and there is no cost for the event.  For more information regarding the event, please Event Chairperson, Jayne Maravola, at (352) 551-7249.

 

Lake County Schools Unveils Weekly Digital Newsletter

altTAVARES — Known for its commitment to quality education, Lake County Schools will begin sharing some of its success stories, including student accomplishments, teacher awards, upcoming events and efficiencies in District operations, in a weekly digital newsletter.

Those interested in receiving the newsletter are encouraged to visit www.lake.k12.fl.us, click on the subscribe button and enter their e-mail address. The weekly newsletter will provide another vehicle for Lake County Schools to communicate with the community. Regularly updated news from Lake County Schools already appears on its website at http://www.lake.k12.fl.us and blog at http://lakecountyschools.wordpress.com.

The first edition of the weekly newsletter went out on Friday, February 25th. Future issues of the newsletter will be sent out every Friday, except holidays. The project was a culmination of teamwork between the Superintendent’s Office and Information Technology Department.

To manage the subscription list for the newsletter, Lake County Schools is utilizing Benchmark Email, a leading e-mail marketing service with more than 65,000 users. The service allows users to easily sign up and opt out of receiving the weekly newsletter.
