Local Businesses Spelling Out Need For Scholarship Funding
Leesburg, Fl – Area businesses will bring on the sting to help raise $266,000 needed to provide college scholarships potentially to 38 students.
The businesses and organizations will put their “stingers” on the line during the 7th annual Take Stock in Children Corporate Spelling Bee, to be held Thursday, September 23rd, from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Lake Receptions in Mount Dora.
Take Stock, managed by the Educational Foundation of Lake County, has provided 2+2 college scholarships (two years of community college and two years of state university) to 454 Lake and Sumter county students in the last 11 years. The organization must purchase the 2 + 2 scholarships which increased in cost this year to almost $7,000. The State of Florida matches the amount.
The competition, in its 7th year, involves participating “hives” conferring on the spelling words in a 12-round contest:
• Spelling teams earn points for each correct word. The winner will be the “colony” with the most points.
• There is no elimination for wrong answers.
• The competition will include speed rounds where teams will have to spell several words at one time.
“We introduced this format last year and it was really well-received and fun,” said Elida Landry, Program Manager, Take Stock in Children. “We hope to raise enough money to purchase enough 2+2 college scholarships to replace the number of students who are graduating and have completed the program. It’s one of the best investments in the community that a person or organization can make.”
Teams are available for sponsorship at the $500 and $1,000 level. Spectators are also invited to attend for $25 per ticket. Team sponsorships and ticket information are available by contacting Take Stock in Children at 352-787-6576 or e-mailing landrye@lake.k12.fl.us.
Sponsors of the 2010 Take Stock in Children Corporate Spelling Bee include Ford Press, The Daily Commercial, United Southern Bank, English Communications, Hometown Health TV, The Educational Foundation of Lake County, Rotary Club of the Villages and Advanced Nursing Concepts.
You can learn more about the event and which businesses are participating in the competition by following Take Stock in Children on Twitter and Facebook.
Take Stock in Children (TSIC) is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty by investing in the future of the community with scholarships, mentors and hope to financially, at-risk, well deserving students in middle and high school. Recipients, who meet the criteria for receiving the scholarships, are eligible to attend two years of a community or junior college plus two years of a Florida state university.
